William 'Bill' Ernest Lundell

February 9, 1930 — September 5, 2020

Bill was born in Heppner, Oregon to Frank M. and Ruth F. (Swanson) Lundell.  He was the oldest of 3 children and the family resided in Ione.  Bill loved his youth spent in Ione among Grandparents and extended family.  Many fond stories of his days in Ione have been passed to his children and grandchildren.

The family relocated to Milwaukie, Oregon in 1942.  Bill's fondness for Ione would take him back there every summer vacation through his remaining childhood and young adulthood.  He spent his summers working on various wheat ranches or helping out at the Ione grocery store operated by his Grandfather Swanson and later his Uncle Cot.

After graduating from Milwaukie High School in 1948,  Bill operated a Signal garage in La Grande for his father until the station was sold in 1949.  Bill enlisted in the Navy in 1950 and served during the Korean War.

After completing his service, Bill returned to Milwaukie and after various jobs, went to work for Western Electric in 1955.   Bill remained a Bell System employee for the next 36 years.

Bill met the love of his life, Katherine Jean Hopkins in 1956.  In 1961 Bill and Jean were married and spent the next 56 years together.  They built a home in Milwauke/Oak Grove area where they raised 3 children.   Bill was active in his children's lives, family camping trips, Boy Scout outings and helping with sporting activities.  Bill was a charter member of the Milwaukie Elks.

In retirement, Bill took up golf and was a weekly member in a men's group at Sah-Hah-Lee golf course.  He and Jean did some traveling as well.  Ship reunions to Branson, MO and other destinations, along with trips to Hawaii and a trip to China.

Bill was preceded in death by both his parents and wife, Jean.     Survivors include his  son, David (Tammy); daughter, Diane; son, Darin (Kari); 3 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

Bill was surrounded in love by his family in his home at the time of his death.

A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 18, 2020 at Hope City Church in Milwaukie.
