Walter Thomas, affectionately known as Tom, passed away quietly at his home on July 1, 2018.
Born in the Bronx, New York ninety years ago, he survived a difficult childhood and went on to become a military veteran, government postal worker, and tax accountant. He had a strong sense of personal and civic integrity and was an eloquent writer of newspaper editorials over the years. A strong advocate for the under privileged and marginalized, he generously supported causes he believed in.
Tom was fortunate to know two loving marriages - the first to Shirley (Lee) Morin and the second to Dottie O'Connor. Tom survived both his wives and his beloved only son, Stephen.
Tom was an avid walker, loved forest hikes, beach combing, and nature. He was a keen gardener, never lost his deep interest in current affairs and politics, savored foreign travel, live jazz, theater, festivals, and great movies. He had a passion for food in all its varieties and loved anything related to Scotland - from the Annual Highland Games, to fiddle playing, shortbread, and ceilidh dancing.
He is survived by his daughter, Toni Thomas; his son-in-law, Peter Wadsworth; and his two grandchildren, Ahven and Fergus.
Tom will be dearly missed.
