Susan Margaret Smith was born May 10, 1950, in Milwaukie, Oregon to Leonard and Margaret Smith. She was one of two children in the family along with her brother, Bob. Susan was very close to her mother, Margaret.
Susan loved sports and played Softball in high school and was very good. She was an All Star, Regional All Star, and MVP. She graduated from Milwaukie High School in the class of 1968. After high school she moved to Portland for a while and then back to Milwaukie. She worked as a keypunch operator for a short time and then went to work for Safeway as a meat packer, until she became disabled around 1986.
Susan never lost her love of sports. She enjoyed golf, softball, and loved bowling. She was a very good bowler. She loved watching her nieces and nephews play their sports. She loved to watch football and baseball. It was especially fun to watch her when she was watching NASCAR because she was so animated.
Susan really liked the music of the 1940’s. She was also crazy about old westerns like Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, Wells Fargo and Cheyenne. She was hooked on the daytime soap, Days of Our Lives; it was an everyday occurrence.
Susan loved her pets, kitties and her dog, Maggie. She was happy to watch the ocean and collect agates on the beach. She found peace there. She loved to stay at the Sandcastle Hotel in Lincoln City, because it was just steps from the beach. She also loved to go crabbing, fishing and camping.
Susan met Judy Schoepp in 1975, they became a couple in 1978 and were married January 26, 2018. They enjoyed each other’s company and loved each other without measure. It didn’t really matter what they were doing as long as they were together.
Susan had many longtime friends. She had friends from sporting events and work and could talk to anyone she met. She held her friends close, and each person was important to her. She always saw the good in people. She was funny and laughed a lot. She was a special woman and a gift to this world. Family was important to her, and everyone was family. She was someone everyone wanted to have in their life. She was kind, loving, loyal, committed to her work, her friends, and most of all, her relationship with Judy.
Susan loved to have fun. She went to Reno with her friend, Dawn and her mother, Donna. They would dress up in these interesting garbs, put in snaggletooth dentures and talk in a southern accent. They would laugh and laugh and just have a blast. She also enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas with family and friends.
She loved the Food Network and recipes in “A Taste of Home”. She liked home cooking best, comfort food.
She was also generous and donated to many causes she thought were important; Make a Wish Network, Lymphoma and Leukemia Society, Shriners Children’s Hospital and the Wounded Vets organization just to name a few.
Susan is survived by her loving wife, Judy; sister-in-law, Julie; and several nieces and nephews whom she loved and adored. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Bob.
A Memorial Service will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 20, 2024 at Stehn Family Chapels Milwaukie Tribute Center, Milwaukie, Oregon.
