Saundra Laverne Smith, 75, a resident of the Milwaukie community, died Saturday morning, May 7, 2011 at her home surrounded by her children. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 2:00 PM at St. Paul\u0027s United Methodist Church Saundra Laverne Smith was born January 25, 1936 in Greenville, Texas to Leon Adolph and Ruth Opal Brown Lederman. She was raised and educated in Texas having completed high school in three years. She moved with her family to the San Jose, California area where she attended college and received her Bachelor\u0027s degree in education from San Jose State College. August 25th, 1956 she wed her husband, A. Nelson Smith. They came to Oregon in 1967 and settled in the Milwaukie area. They celebrated almost fifty years of life together and raised three children. Saundra taught at Linwood and Bilquist Elementary Schools and in 1977 she earned her Master\u0027s degree from Lewis and Clark College. She retired in 1992, but stayed active in the community and serving at her church, St. Paul\u0027s United Methodist. Saundra was very committed to family. She enjoyed entertaining and spending time with her loved ones. She traveled to Europe, Asia, and numerous destinations throughout the U.S., including Texas and California. She also made many trips to visit her beloved grandchildren. When not traveling Saundra spent her time in her flower garden. She always had pristine flowers in her home. She was an avid reader and letter writer. She never missed sending a card for a loved one\u0027s special occasion. Saundra was preceded in death by her husband A. Nelson Smith. She is survived by her two daughters; Cindy and husband, Skip Inscore of Dayville, Oregon, Cheryl and husband, Otey Enoch of Taichung, Taiwan, her son, Ken, and wife Shari, Smith of Burlington, WA; her sisters, Bettye Hartman of San Jose, CA and Jan Lewis of Aurora, CO; and her 9 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Renee, Andrew, Bradley, Allison, Brenna, Hannah, Owen, and Peter, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions made to the Clackamas Service Center at 8800 SE 80th Ave. Portland, Oregon 97206 or St. Paul\u0027s United Methodist Church in Saundras\u0027 memory.
