Robert G. Sample was born January 16, 1919 in Horatio, Arkansas to William and Clara Sample. Robert had 2 brothers and 2 sisters. He played football and graduated from Horatio High School.
In 1937 he joined the CCC Company 4799 in Kettle Falls, Washington and then Company 1742 in Ozone, Arkansas where he rose in the ranks to assistant leader. In 1940 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. While in the Army, he missed the attack on Pearl Harbor by 2 days, having boarded a ship on December 5th for the Philippines; and also missed the Bataan Death March. In 1943 he went to England and was in the D-Day attack where he was landed at Normandy Beach. He was also stationed in France, Luxemburg, Belgium and Germany before being discharged in 1945 with the rank of sergeant.
On December 8, 1945 he married June Danielson. From their union came a daughter, Sandra Van Dyne; son, Douglas Sample; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.
In 1946 the family moved to West Linn, Oregon where Robert found work at Crown Zellerbach. He was a pulp and sulfate mixer, retiring after 35 years. He was a member of AWPPW Local 68 and Tri-City Baptist Temple in Gladstone, Oregon.
