After a severe stroke, Smokey passed on 9/11/14. He was a longtime resident of the Saint Johns area of Portland Oregon. After graduating from Jefferson High School he entered the U.S.Air Force and served 5 years. He was predeceased by his father, Alfred Loomis Mebus, his mother Evelyn Selma Hauser Mebus and his brother Jerry Alfred Mebus. He is survived by his sister Gwili Powell Trujillo Blufton of Oregon City and his brother Lawrence Alfred Mebus of Torrington, Ct. as well as numerous nieces and nephews. After leaving the military Smokey worked for Minneapolis Honeywell as a technician and then worked for Continental Can, Sonoco, Texaco all of which were in the Portland area. He was also a shrimp fisherman in Louisiana. Smokey was a friend to all that knew him. His love of animals was well known. He was also a rabid NASCAR fan.
