Nathan Douglas "Doug" Laster
May 14, 1921 — May 3, 2022
Nathan Douglas "Doug" Laster was born May 14,1921 in New York City to Morris Laster and Deena "Diana" (Sperber) who immigrated a few years prior from Austria. He was the 5th of seven siblings.
He graduated from City College of New York in Electronics Engineering. While in college he joined the Navy as an ensign after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the US Navy from 1944-1946 and attained rank of Lieutenant (j.g.). He worked to help develop sonar for destroyers to detect enemy submarines. After the war he spent time with the American Forces in occupied Japan. Returning stateside, he was stationed at Norfolk where he met, Beverley JoAnn Sawyer of Portsmouth VA. They married on October 15, 1950.
He and Beverley had 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He taught all his children and grandchildren how to fish and swim. He lived in Virginia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Oregon. He and Beverley were avid world travelers and were married for 54 years.
During his career Doug worked at various electronics companies, specializing in high energy capacitors. He was active in Masons, Shriners and Eastern Star. His avocations included being a ham radio operator, Morse code operator and lifeguarding. He was last certified as a lifeguard at age 75 and was licensed as an amateur radio operator at age 80 (K3EU).
He enjoyed going to the gym until age 95. Was active in Elks, Eagles and the American Legion. He enjoyed ballroom dancing until age 99 with his partner Marilyn Batey.
Doug is survived by his brother, Percy Laster of New York; and his children, Timothy Douglas Laster, Lori Kendall Wolak, and Melanie Dawn Jeske.
Doug passed away peacefully at home surrounded by friends and family on May 3, 2022 at the age of 100.
A visitation will be 12 to 2 p.m., Thursday, May 12, 2022, followed by a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. at Stehn Family Chapels Milwaukie Tribute Center, Milwaukie, OR. Cemetery Service with Military Honors will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 13, 2022 at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, OR.
