Maurice Louis Herinckx

December 30, 1929 — July 14, 2015

Maurice Herinckx, 85, died July 14. A funeral Mass will be held at Ascension Catholic Church, 743 SE 76th in Portland, Oregon, 97215, at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 22, preceded by the Rosary at 9:00 a.m. Committal services will be at Willamette National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Mr. Herinckx was born on December 30, 1929, in Banks, Oregon to Frank and Netti Herinckx, both immigrants from Belgium. The youngest of eight children, he worked on the family farm while his older brothers shipped out on military service during World War II. After graduating from St. Francis of Assisi in Roy, he completed barber college and soon thereafter enlisted in the Navy and served four years during the Korean War aboard two aircraft carriers, the USS Antietam and the USS Yorktown. He met Johanna Healy of Portland while on leave, and after his discharge the two married on August 21st, 1954 at Ascension Catholic Church. They were married for 48 years until Johanna\u0027s passing in 2002. He was a parishioner at Ascension for 61 years, and made his home on Mt. Tabor where he lived for 60 years in the family home. Work was his passion, and he worked his entire life, up to four months before his passing. His work ethic was born of his farm upbringing, where he had a job from the time he was old enough to do chores. After leaving the military service, he operated his own barbershop for 25 years in the Sovereign Hotel in downtown Portland. He then worked 15 years in sales and delivery for Pella Wood Windows and Doors of Oregon. Upon retirement, he took another job driving shuttle buses at the Portland International Airport, where he worked for an additional 18 years. He loved to work, and it provided him purpose and rich social interaction. Mr. Herinckx is survived by his five sons, Matthew (Terri), Mark (Christin), Ed (Lorie), Tim and Maurice (Nikki); nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren."",
