Mary Janette Craig (formerly Feight), age 93, died Sunday, September 13, 2015. Mary was born in Grayling, Michigan and was the oldest child of Eva and Charles Craig, both deceased.
Mary Craig had a long and fulfilling life. She grew up living at the fish hatchery her father ran; and, thus, her lifelong love of interacting with nature began. She was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army during WWII and ran the mess hall. Following an honorable discharge, she moved to Portland with her husband and raised 6 children. While her children were growing up, she earned a Bachelor's degree from Cascade College using the GI Bill, taught as a substitute teacher at the high school level, and completed post-graduate work so she could become a full time 5th grade teacher. During this time she also volunteered as a Den Mother in the Boy Scouts and was a Girl Scout Troop Leader.
After retiring as a teacher, she found employment opportunities with the Head Start program and as a cook for an overnight summer camp. She earned an Associate Degree in Floristry from Mt. Hood Community College and then opened her own FTD Floristry shop in Lincoln City where she served that community for many years. She retired again and during her second retirement, she wrote and self-published a children's book, wrote several poems for which she received recognition, took tap dance lessons, hiked, back-packed in Europe, and was a world traveler. During her life, she visited almost every state in the United States.
Mary Craig is survived by her 6 children, 8 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. She will be missed. Mary Craig was preceded in death by her brother, James Craig, and her former husband, Albert F. Feight.
