Mary Rose (McGregor) Cates was born July 14, 1934 in Fargo, North Dakota.
She spent her early life in Minnesota and much of that at the MacGregor farm. Her family moved to Portland, Oregon and there she graduated from Cleveland High School in 1952.
She met Lawrence Cates in late 1952 and they were married on December 31, 1952 in Portland.
Lawrence was in the Navy at the time and was sometimes stateside and sometimes was in Japan.
On July 28, 1955, she gave birth to their son, David L. Cates in Portland. David preceded her in death on July 5, 2016.
In November, 1957 she gave birth to their daughter, Debra S. Cates-Boyd in Idaho.
For a few years, they lived in Idaho and then came back to Portland in the early 1960's, eventually buying a 17 acre farm in Estacada, Oregon and making a life out there. She loved her flowers and other gardening efforts. She especially enjoyed the Zucchini that she could cook up in several recipes.
They were married for 28 years and then divorced in Portland.
Mary moved to Anchorage, Alaska in the mid 1990's, working for Key Bank, and enjoyed her time there with the beautiful scenery and new things to investigate.
Mary loved reading. Mostly, she liked mystery type books, but some romance novels, too.
She was one of those unique people that managed to maintain friendships that she made in grade school and high school. Keeping in regular contact with those friends for up to 75 years or more.
Mary loved dancing and listening to music from her era. She joined the North Portland Eagles and also became the president of the Servetus dance club. She was always friendly and helpful and had many friends and acquaintances who loved her.
She enjoyed cooking recipes with odd ingredients like 7-up chicken. But also enjoyed going out to dine.
Mary kept in steady contact with her friends and relatives. She loved them all.
She will be missed by many.
