Mark Hayes Mcfarland

December 16, 1960 — June 23, 2022

Mark Hayes McFarland passed away from cancer at home with his family on Thursday, June 23, 2022.  He faced his illness with immense courage and grace.  Mark was born on December 16, 1960, in Portland, Oregon, to James and Elizabeth McFarland.  Mark attended Ainsworth Elementary School, Lincoln High School, and the University of Oregon, where he graduated with a BS in Business Administration and Finance in 1983.

Mark was drawn early on to the commercial real estate field, and after graduation from college, he joined Cushman and Wakefield where he became a Senior Director of the firm.  He worked at Cushman from 1983 through 1995, and then joined Trammell Crow where he was a Partner from 1996 through 2005.  He later co-founded the Portland office of Pacific Real Estate Partners, which was later sold to JLL in 2011.  For nearly a decade, he served as a Principal Broker and Senior Vice President at JLL, and he ended his 39-year career as an Executive Vice President and Shareholder with Kidder Mathews.  Mark was a respected leader in the industry; he was the first office broker to receive the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR) designation and served as President of SIOR's Portland chapter.  He was a board member of the Commercial Association of Brokers, and a three-time recipient of the Commercial Real Estate Transaction of the Year award.

As important as Mark's profession was to him, his faith, family and friends truly defined his life.  Mark was passionate about his relationship to Christ, and he served as the President and Stewardship Chair for Sunset Presbyterian Church. As the Capital Campaign Chair, he organized and led a fundraising campaign that raised $10.5 million for construction of a new sanctuary.  With the love of his life, Rhonda Cardella, Mark also built a wonderful 37-year marriage and welcomed two sons, Taylor and Carter, into their family.  Mark and Rhonda's relationship grew from a chance encounter at the Lincoln High School library into a love story spanning decades.  Mark was a devoted father who loved his sons.  For the past seven years, Carter worked alongside Mark, learning the business of real estate.  This brought Mark considerable joy, as did their shared interests and pastimes. They were truly the best of friends.

Mark enjoyed a wide circle of friends representing all facets of his amazing life.  Mark diligently maintained those relationships that lasted from childhood until his last days. He was an avid golfer from a young age, starting out at Waverley Country Club and as the top golfer for the Lincoln Cardinals, and continuing to  improve until he achieved a single digit handicap and four glorious holes-in-one.  Mark's simple pleasures included meeting friends for coffee or lunch, a Friday afternoon round at The Reserve Golf Club, and savoring dinner at a new restaurant with Rhonda.

Mark is survived by his wife Rhonda, their sons Taylor and Carter, and Mark's siblings Mary, Marty, Molly, and their respective families.  He also leaves behind his loving canine companion, Tee Time.  A service will be held on Tuesday, July 12 at 1 p.m. at Sunset Presbyterian Church.  The family suggests contributions in Mark's memory to The First Tee of Greater Portland at https://firstteegreaterportland.org/ .

In Mark's memory, those who loved and appreciated him are encouraged to hit the links, try a new restaurant with your loved ones, or take a nice walk on a summer day with your pup.
