Marion Irene Hango passed away on July 19, 2024, from complications of advanced age, 6 days shy of her 96th birthday, comforted by her daughter, Barbara, at her side.
Her life in this world began on July 25, 1928, in Portland, Oregon. Although she was the only child of Arthur Marion and Ora Irene Yerkes, she was born into a large extended family with 20 first cousins. The Depression era set in and the family moved to White Salmon, Washington, where Marion spent most of her youth. The family returned to Portland in the early 1940s, purchasing a small bungalow in NE Portland (which is still in the family today) and Marion graduated from Grant High School in 1946. While attending Oregon State College, studying business, she met a young WWII veteran by the name of Bob Hango on a blind date to a Portland Beavers baseball game. Bob and Marion were married in October 1948 and embarked upon their adventure of 64 years of marriage until Bob's passing in 2011. An honorary degree, the "PHT" (Push Hubby Through) was earned as Marion worked to help Bob gain his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State College (Go Beavs!). Marion spent several years working for Hills Brothers Coffee as she and Bob worked and saved to build their first home in 1955, in Arden Park in Milwaukie. When Barbara Ann came along in 1959, Marion decided to work at home as a full-time mother raising and caring for their daughter. She spent many summer days canning and preserving the harvest from their garden as well as apples, peaches, pears, and berries u-picked at local farms. The pantry and freezer were always full of deliciousness. Her organizational skills were evident in the wonderful children's birthday parties she planned for Barbara as well, creating so many memories. Thank you, Mom. In 1967, Marion began her fulfilling work for The Easter Seal Society of Oregon as their Volunteer Coordinator extraordinaire capping off her career of 28 years in 1995.
Philanthropy and serving others in a large or small way defined Marion her entire life. As early as her teenage years she was volunteering for the American Legion Auxiliary. During the 1960s, Marion became a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Delta Phi Chapter and shared her talents by serving as the NW District Council President, 2 terms as President of her chapter and organizing and participating in a multitude of fundraising and social events - making lifelong friends along the way.
Over the years there was always time for family, friends, and travel. Bob and Marion travelled extensively across the United States. Road trips were a favorite for them (the longest being a 5-week trip across the United States with their young pre-teen, sharing with her an appreciation for a great country) - beach trips, camping, visiting national parks, amusement parks and many cities along the way. Palm Springs became an annual trip and flying to (and of course being deeply involved in) Bob's annual USS McDougal shipmate reunions for many years was a joy.
1980 marked the year that Bob and Marion moved from Milwaukie to their new home in Clackamas, where she resided until 2022.
Perhaps Marion's favorite destination was on the Oregon Coast. In 1979, she and Bob along with 3 of his siblings and their spouses purchased a family beach house in Arch Cape. So many wonderful memories have come to be and continue to be created at The Huvila!
Time with friends and family was most important. Many hobbies over the years included bowling leagues, golf, an array of card games (she was an excellent bridge player), family games (she usually won), attending Pops concerts and knitting. Marion adored and was very proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and would always be there supporting them in any way she could - school, music, equestrian competitions, baseball, football, birthdays and holidays, whatever it was, she was there.
Marion loved her people - not only her small immediate family, but all of her extended family which includes many nieces and nephews as well as the numerous friends she made over her lifetime.
The immediate family includes Parents, Arthur and Ora Yerkes (deceased); Husband, Bob Hango (deceased); Daughter, Barbara Iggulden; Son-in-law, Ron Iggulden, Jr.; Granddaughter, Kristina (Jason) Bonadurer; Grandson, Robbie Iggulden; and Great-Grandchildren, Cecily, Remy and Audrey Bonadurer.
❤️ TILL WE MEET AGAIN...IN DUE TIME ❤️
Marion had a small, private burial on July 30, 2024, at Willamette National Cemetery to be together again with Bob.
Marion shared her gifts with so many and also loved flowers, so please feel free to make a donation in her name to a charity of your choosing and consider giving the gift of flowers to someone to brighten their day.
