Born in Clayton, New Mexico on July 1, 1924 Lou was one of 9 children born to Joseph and Leona Martinez. Raised in Denver, Colorado, Lou graduated from North High School in Denver where he excelled in wrestling. During WWII he joined the U.S. Navy and saw extensive combat duty in the Pacific theater aboard the USS Hickox.
Lou later moved to Sacramento, California where he met and married Bettie Jo McCarroll. While in Sacramento he was heavily involved in managing Little League, Pony League and other youth teams.
After retiring from Federal service he moved to Milwaukie, Oregon where he lived until his death on May 9, 2016. He was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels in Clackamas County from 2009 to 2013.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie Jo Martinez. He is survived by his daughter, Gayle Donahue and husband, Jack of Milwaukie, OR; son, Lou Martinez, Jr.; grandson, Jason Martinez of Colorado; granddaughter, Serena Helvey of Milwaukie; great-granddaughter, Hollie Helvey and great-grandson, Levi Helvey of Milwaukie and numerous nieces and nephews in Colorado and California.
We are grateful for the caring staff at Clackamas View Senior Living and Comfort Hospice who cared for Lou in his final months.
