LeRoy George Hummel 1922-2010 LeRoy George Hummel, 88, a resident of the Milwaukie community died Thursday, November 18, 2010 at his home of natural causes. A Rosary Prayer Service will be held Tuesday, November 30, at 1:00 pm at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 10955 SE 25th Avenue, Milwaukie, Oregon, A Memorial Mass will follow at 1:30 pm with celebrant Reverend Maxy D\u0027Costa officiating. Family and Friends are invited to attend a reception at the Parish Center immediately following the services. Private Cremation Rites have been held. Interment will be held at Willamette National Cemetery at a later date. LeRoy George Hummel was born March 28, 1922 in Great Falls, Montana to the late Alex and Matilda Grohs Hummel. He was raised and educated in Montana where he graduated from high school and attended college at Montana State College receiving his degree in general sciences. Following his education he joined the US Navy in 1942, where he served for several years in the South Pacific during World War II, returning home in 1946. LeRoy was married to Chelsea Mae Green on March 4, 1946. Together they celebrated sixty four years of life together and raised four children. She preceded him in death on May 29, 2010. He moved his family to Oregon in 1950 where he taught school, eventually settling the family in the Milwaukie area. LeRoy went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a Mechanical Engineer, retiring after thirty years in 1986. Among his personal interests he enjoyed traveling in the motor home with his wife. They drove to Alaska and Canada on several occasions. \u0026quot;Roy\u0026quot; liked to go fishing, hunting, along with family and friends campouts. He was a devoted member of the Catholic Church, along with being an active member of the Knights of Columbus, holding many political offices with the organization throughout the years. LeRoy was a member of the VFW, and many of the neighborhood community organizations and civic groups. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Michael Hummel. Survivors include his children, John Hummel, Paul Hummel, Joann Hughes, and LeRoy\u0027s sister, Jean Williams of Orlando, Fl, Also surviving are eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren with one on the way. The family requests in lieu of flowers, that remembrance are contributed to OHSU Doernbecher Children\u0027s Hospital or The North West Family Services, 6200 SE King Road, Milwaukie, Or 97222, in his memory.
