Lena Obritschkewitsch passed away Sunday, July 5, 2015 on what would have been her 61st marriage anniversary to James, who preceded her 17 years ago. Lena was 86.
Lena was always a strong-willed person, Born on August 19, 1928 in Havelock, North Dakota to Joseph and Helen Nedelkovitsch. Only three pounds at birth, Lena's grandmother, who was a midwife, took charge of raising her. Sickly as a child, a relative said she would pay for all the salt Lena would ever need.
Lena was the second oldest of five, with three sisters, Catherine Hauck, Anna Dahl, Mary Ryan and a brother, Joseph Jr. Lena was the last of her siblings to pass.
Lena grew up in New England, North Dakota, just 20 miles from the family of her future husband, James. However, the two did not meet until their families moved to the pacific northwest. Lena and James met through a mutual friend while she worked as an elevator operator and in the diet kitchen of a hospital in Washington state.
The couple married on July 5, 1954, moving to Milwaukie, Oregon where they built their own house and raised four children, Betty Wilkins, Dennis, Shirley and Richard Obritschkewitsch. Lena lived in that house through the time of her death. The couple had a fifth child, Judy, who died at birth.
Lena took pride in being a very devoted wife and mother, focusing her efforts on a happy family life, trying to instill in her children a spirit of caring and giving.
Lena was a parishioner at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Milwaukie for 60 years and was a member of the Altar Society. Wanting to be friends and helpful to all, it was noted that Lena seemed to know everyone.
In addition to four children, Lena is survived by four grandchildren, Jamie Wilkins, Shawna Wilson, Angela Hess and Abbey Blankenship and 10 great-grandchildren.
