LaVerne R. Crossland August 4, 1923 - May 5, 2010 LaVerne was born in Picher Oklahoma to Sarah and William Carpenter, the second of five children. After her husband\u0027s death, she followed her mother, brothers and sisters to Portland in 1952, with 2 young sons. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bert Crossland; brother, William Carpenter, his wife Crystal; sister, Bonny Longan, her husband Garland; and son John Crossland. She is survived by her Son Jim Crossland, and his wife Lesley; brother, Donald Carpenter and his wife Maxine; sister, Alene Dolan; granddaughter Tiffany Hevly and her husband Brian and their daughter MacKenzie. LaVerne worked as a beautician all of her life and owned beauty shops in Portland on NE Union, NE 33rd and Killingsworth, Cannon Beach and in the Multnomah area of Portland. She was very driven and independent and put everything she had into making a sucessful buisness and a good life for her sons. Her passion was gardening and people would stop to take pictures of her labors in her yard. She was a vivacious woman and never knew when to stop. If she did stop it was because the Trailblazers were playing. She was known as a cat person, and people never hesitated to bring strays to her. She always took them in and gave them a loving home. She was a voracious reader and dreamed about traveling to all of the places she had read about. In her retirement she was able to travel with her sisters to many places she had always read about. She was a very giving woman and never hesitated to help out a person in need. She was given the opportunity to raise her granddaughter and never complained about it (even though she did call her brat child). That granddaughter will be forever grateful for her sacrifices in doing that. Thanks Grandma. She will be missed by all of her family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Peake Funeral Chapel in Milwaukie. Viewing at 1:30. Contributions in LaVerne\u0027s memory may be made to your favorite charity."",
