Julie Anne (Boyle) Ziegler passed away Tuesday August 9, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer, with her family by her side. Julie was born November 17, 1956 in Camp Pendleton, Oceanside California, the second of four children of Dr. Orville and Emily (Nichols) Boyle. Julie spent her first year on the naval base in Oceanside where her Dad was stationed in the Navy. From there, the family settled in Milwaukie, Oregon, where Julie spent the rest of her childhood, and most of her adult life.
Julie attended grade school in Oak Grove, where she would eventually spend the majority of her career teaching in the very same neighborhood school. Julie attended Rex Putnam High school, Class of 1974. It was then on to the University of Oregon where she earned her teaching degree and was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. She went on to complete her Master's in Education at PSU.
Julie's greatest treasure is her three children and being their mom was always her number one priority. She was happiest when her living room was full of the kids and their friends, watching Trailblazer basketball, Broncos football or the Oregon Ducks. Julie was affectionately known as "Mama Jules," a second mom to many of her children's friends. Julie found happiness in life's simple pleasures - warm sunny days lounging near the water, sharing time and laughter with her many friends and coworkers, family get-togethers and holidays, pedicures, and shooting pool. She loved music, especially James Taylor, and her favorite movie was the Sound of Music.
Anyone fortunate to have known her would agree that Julie had a special way of making the people in her life feel valued and loved, whether she'd known you for a lifetime or just a couple of hours. As an educator, she taught hundreds of children in her 35 year career, sharing and inspiring young students with her passion for literacy. Julie's gentle and nurturing spirit was consistently evident in her teaching philosophy and belief that every child deserved her utmost respect, effort and dedication. She showed unique compassion for those who needed a little "extra" support, not just academically, but emotionally. Children found a certain sense of safety and comfort in her presence and she just seemed to be able to sense when someone was in need of a little extra love and attention. Julie also served as a union representative where she was a steadfast advocate for her teaching colleagues.
Julie is survived by her three children, Hannah, Gabriel and Zachary; daughter in-law, Myesa; parents, Orville and Emily Boyle; brothers, Tom Boyle (Carol) and Matt Boyle (Kathy); sister, Kelly Middendorff (Michael); nieces and nephews, Danielle (Donny), Tyler, Megan, Maxwell, Mallory and Mia; great-nephews, Mason, Logan and Reece; great-niece, Quinn and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Family, friends and others whose lives have been touched by Julie are invited to attend a celebration of her life at Rex Putnam High School, Main Auditorium, 4950SE Roethe Rd, Milwaukie, OR 97267 on Saturday August 20th at 11:00 am.
