Joe H. Shelley died peacefully at home on June 19, 2015. He was born in Sandy, Oregon on February 23, 1920 to Percy and Blanche Shelley. He grew up both on a ranch in Marmot and in Sandy. He graduated from Sandy High School and in 1939 enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to the USS Wasp and remained with the ship until it was sunk on September 15, 1942. He came home on leave and married Alice Mituniewicz on November 13, 1942. After the war ended he enrolled at Oregon State University and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering and a life-long love of the Beavers.
In 1961 he and his family built a house in Milwaukie and Joe went to work for the Electrical Contractors Bid Registry from which he retired in 1982. Joe was a long-time parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Milwaukie. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Sandy Historical Museum in his hometown.
Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Johnnie Audrey Morris. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Alice Shelley; daughter, Kathleen Fonaas (Kim); son, Joseph Daniel Shelley; 4 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
