Joe was born in Portland, OR to Annell and Don O'Neill. He grew up in Milwaukie, participating in any activity involving a ball. This continued through high school, until graduating from Rex Putnam High School. While attending community college, 9-11 happened, which prompted Joe to enlist in the Army.
Upon entering the service, Joe became a medic with the intention of helping others. This led to stints in the U.S., Korea and Iraq, where he was seriously injured. Joe spent the preponderance of his time with the 10th Mountain Division (222) and eventually retired after having been reassigned to Ft. Leavenworth, KS.
Adventure continued post-retirement as he filled positions for various organizations in Afghanistan and throughout Africa. Joe thoroughly enjoyed the people, landscapes and animals of Africa.
He is survived by his parents, Don and Annell; brothers, Ben and Tom; son, Olen O'Neill; nephew, Theo O'Neill; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, given that Joe really liked dogs, the family suggest contribution be made to your local Humane Society.
