Joe Calcagno, Jr.

Joe Calcagno Jr. passed away peacefully on June 10, 2023 at 95 years old.
Joe was born in Portland on August 9, 1927 to Joe and Giovanna Calcagno. He was the third of six children. He grew up farming in Northeast Portland and attended Park Rose High School.
In 1951 Joe married Adalgisa Foglia in Cologna Spiaggia, Italy. When they returned, they lived in Portland with Joe's family. Eventually they moved to a new farm on Columbia Boulevard where they raised three children, Joey, Howard, and Joanne. They farmed parsnips, squash, lettuce, and other vegetables for more than 30 years.
After retirement, Joe and Algi moved to a new home in Happy Valley. Joe and Algi's work ethic and generosity over the years were appreciated by friends and family. In his retirement Joe cultivated a huge garden filled with fruit, vegetables, and flowers. Visitors often left with boxes of fresh produce and eggs from his many chickens. Joe also enjoyed fishing, hunting, mushrooming, and spending time with his eight grandchildren. He and Algi were married for 69 years.
Joe was preceded in death by his daughter, Joanne (2006); and wife, Adalgisa (2020). He is survived by his sons, Joe (Deana), Howard (Patty); son-in-law, Frank Battilega (Catherine); eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life mass will be 10 a.m., Friday, June 23, 2023 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Milwaukie, OR.
