James (Jim) Welborn, at the age of 84, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 29, 2015. He was born March 14, 1930 to Carl and Ann Welborn in Medford, Oregon. The family moved to Portland where Jim spent his childhood and graduated from high school in 1948. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, of almost 50 years in 2003, and his daughter, Jan Mituniewicz in 2013. Jim was drafted into the Army March, 1951 and served until March, 1953. Jim and Betty met in Portland and were married May 9, 1953. During their marriage Jim and Betty had several places they called home. From Northeast Portland to Milwaukie to Southeast Portland to Rockaway to their motorhome to Yuma, AZ; "Home" was where-ever they felt comfortable. Jim worked for Pacific Northwest Bell for many years. After retiring, Jim and Betty enjoyed spending time on the Oregon Coast. They also enjoyed many vacations to Hawaii with his cousin, Don Nelson and wife Joyce. When their kids were young Jim and Betty often went camping with trips to the beach or central Oregon. These trips eventually evolved into mini bike trips which the family all enjoyed. When the kids had grown and married, the trips became 4-wheeler trips, and of course Jim and Betty enjoyed this as well. Jim also loved to go salmon fishing so he and his son Mark ventured out in the Pacific Ocean many times to hook the "big one" that got away. Jim was also a Ham Radio enthusiast. Where ever his home base was he had to have a radio room. You could usually find him searching the "skip" and talking to his friends in all corners of the world. Most recently Jim was living in West Linn Oregon with his companion, Charlene Imholt. Together they had enjoyed numerous cruises consisting of South Pacific, Caribbean, Mexico and Alaska. They had plans to go on a cruise in March of this year to the Caribbean. Jim was very proud of all five of his grandsons and enjoyed being a part of their special occasions and accomplishments, from attending the many sporting events to watching them build homes. Everything they did meant the world to him. Jim is survived by his son Mark Welborn (Susan), daughter Sue Bailey (Clark), son-in- law, Ron Mituniewicz; five grandsons: Geoff Schumacher (Nicole Scott), Jon Schumacher (Courtney), Jim Schumacher (Stephanie Young), Steven Welborn, Michael Welborn; two great-grandsons: Ethan Schumacher, Easton Schumacher; one great-granddaughter: Avery Schumacher; extended family members: grandkids Jessica Stalling (Mark), Chris Bailey; great grandkids: Jenifer Gayner, Rylea Stalling, Trent Noblit, Ryder Young.
