Hazel Marion Fetty

February 7, 1919 — February 12, 2014

Hazel Marion Fetty (née Phillips) died on Feb. 12, 2014, in Mesa, Arizona, at the age of 95.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Marion Phillips and Hazel Marie Esther Phillips (née Barnes); her brother, Wilbert Maurice (Bud) Phillips; her sister, Jennette LaVonne Fetty/Johnston (née Phillips); and her husband, James (Jim) Cecil Fetty, Jr.

She is survived by her sister, Leah Lorraine Gross/Evans (née Phillips); her brother, Henry Ralph Phillips; her children, James Clifford Fetty, Dennis Gerald Fetty, and Christine Charmain Etter; her grandchildren, Tiffany Michelle Cameron Geller and Jason Cyrus Fetty; her step-granddaughter, Michelle Renee Fowler; 4 great-grandchildren; and various nephews and nieces.

Hazel was born on Feb. 7, 1919, in Portland.  She graduated from Franklin H.S. and secured a job at one of the Shriners' Hospitals for Crippled Children as a nursing attendant.  During her teens she met and fell in love with Jim.  When he joined the Army Air Corps as a mechanic/gunner and was posted to Hickam Field in Hawaii, she followed him there in September 1941 and went to work at Leahi Hospital in Honolulu.  Both she and Jim survived the Japanese attack on Dec. 7, 1941.  They were married 17 days later-the day before Christmas.  As a military dependent, she was required to return to the mainland while Jim fought in the South Pacific.  Jim contracted malaria, recuperated in New Zealand, and returned Stateside in 1943, at which time they were able to live as husband and wife for the first time.  Jim served as an instructor and clerk for the duration of the war. The young couple traveled frequently until VJ Day, living briefly in Utah, Washington, Oklahoma (where their first son was born), New Mexico, and Mississippi.  Their travels continued after the war, with postings in Oregon (where their second son was born), California (where their daughter was born), Washington, Japan, South Carolina, Texas, and Libya.

After a final tour of duty at McChord AFB, Hazel and Jim retired to a new home in Steilacoom, Washington.  There she pursued interests in gardening, quilting, reading, and genealogy.  However, her wanderlust never abated.  She and Jim visited many places in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in their RV.  They also revisited New Zealand and Hawaii.  All of these adventures were eventually chronicled in the memoirs she wrote, My Stowaway Heart.

For her last 15 months, Hazel lived with her daughter in Mesa, Arizona.  She will be buried with her husband (who died in 1993) in Willamette National Cemetery following a funeral service at Stehn Family Chapels, Milwaukie, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014.

Hazel's family extends profound gratitude to the staffs of Banner Gateway Hospital and Hospice of Arizona (Greenfield House) in Mesa for the compassionate care and comfortable facilities provided for Hazel in the final week of her life.
