Harold was born March 6 of 1932 in Minot, North Dakota. He was the youngest of four children and the only son (and last surviving) of Harold E. Kardell Sr. and Elizabeth.
When Harold was four years old he started hanging out with an older man named Scotty so people started referring to him as 'Little Scotty'. Eventually, big Scotty wasn't referred to by that name and 'Little Scotty', became Scotty for the rest of his life.
When Scotty was in late elementary school his family moved to the Portland area. He lived in Vanport and experienced the Vanport Flood of 1948.
Scotty went to Roosevelt High School where he left early to join the United States Air Force and earned his GED. He became an aircraft electrician and later an instructor. Before Scotty was married he was stationed in Portland, Las Vegas and Japan. After he married Maureen Huit in 1956 he was stationed at McGuire AFB in New Jersey, Klamath AFB in Oregon, Iceland, Chanute AFB in Illinois and lastly, McGuire AFB in New Jersey. After 20 years he retired as a Tech Sergeant in 1972. Then he spent the next 20 years as a postal carrier before retiring at the age of 60.
Scotty left a living legacy of three daughters: Kathy, Judy and Karen; five grandchildren: Carol-Marie, Scotty, Kyle, Torey and Karenna; and six great-grandchildren. Maureen Kardell has been a faithful wife and mother by his side for 60 years.
