George Howard Jones

January 17, 1930 — August 28, 2022

George H. Jones, a prominent resident of Lake Oswego, Oregon, recently died at the age of 92 on August 28, 2022.  He is survived by his sons, Field and Scott and many nieces and nephews.

George was born in San Diego, California on January 17, 1930.  His father was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the early morning Japanese invasion on December 7, 1941.  George, 11 years old, remembers being in his backyard as the planes attacked, even hitting his own home.  He watched as the Oklahoma sank in Battleship Row.  He was taken to the base hanger for protection and came back to find bullet holes in his home, through his closet and clothes.  He belonged to the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

George spent time as a taxi driver and a financial officer.  He graduated in 1956 from Southern Oregon College and honorably served our country in the Army from 1951 to 1953.  He opened his own business, Jones Sports Company, making golf bags.  He began by sewing leather bags in his basement and later added a few employees and eventually dozens.  George invented a medium size golf bag that became a favorite among many professional golfers.

An avid golfer himself, he spent many enjoyable hours with his buddies on the green and in the club house.  George loved to travel and spend time in the SAF (Salmon Attack Force) Club, a gathering of his buddies to originally fish and later play golf with evening entertainment of cards and cigars.

George was married to Karen Hayes and Virginia Hansen who he remained good friends with for life. George will be missed by all who knew him as a cunning card player, smart businessman, excellent host, and good friend.

George's sons tell of a man who worked extremely hard, generous, very bright, and caring, who always wanted to teach you what he knew.  He also had a great sense of humor.  His sons were with him his final days.  George passed away in his sleep.  And on his final days, he was still asking for some of his favorite things, milk shakes and cigars.

A Memorial Service will be held on October 1st, 2022, at Riverview Abbey. Please check back here at a later date for service times and details.
