F. Melba Goevelinger

Melba was born in Portland on January 13, 1920, the oldest child of Calvin William Johnson and Nellie Irene Parrish Johnson. She passed away in Portland, Oregon on July 22, 2015. She is survived by her brother Calvin Frank Johnson of Astoria and her sister Colleen Johnson Hensley of Vancouver, WA. In 1939 she married August (Gus) Goevelinger. They have three children, seven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Their daughter Melba Sherrie Goevelinger Hurst and her husband Jerry currently live in Hampton, Virginia. Their son Thomas Goevelinger resides in Albuquerque, NM and their son Nickolas Goevelinger and his wife Carol are in Crescent Lake, Oregon. Gus passed away in 1963. Melba graduated from Milwaukie high school in 1939. During World War II she volunteered as an aircraft spotter. Climbing to the top of a spotting tower in Milwaukie, she identified and logged all aircraft in the area. She always loved books, during the 1950s and 1960\u0027s she worked in the book department of J.K. Gill Company in Portland. In the 1970\u0027s she was the manager of the Marylhurst College Book Store. Melba loved to travel and was very interested in genealogy research. In 1968 she married Archie N. Searle. She and Archie traveled extensively in the United States. Through research into her ancestry she located, corresponded with and met living descendants of her ancestors both in the US and England. Archie passed away in 1993. In 1997 she and her son Tom traveled to England and spent five weeks visiting relatives of her grandfather, Thomas Parrish, in Yorkshire. In recent years Melba has lived with her son Tom in Salinas, California; Albuquerque, New Mexico and at her family home in Milwaukie, Oregon. Funeral services will be held at St John the Baptist Catholic Church, Milwaukie on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at 1:00 PM.
