Ethel Mary (Headley) Neubauer was born to Clarence and Mildred Headley in Los Angeles. The family moved to Portland about 1930. Ethel graduated from Franklin High School, class of 1945. She entered the Cadet Nurse Corps nurse training program at Providence Hospital following high school. She left the program in 1947 to marry Edward K. Neubauer. She worked as a medical assistant to Drs. Walter and Jessie Brodie until the birth of her first child.
Over the years, Ethel was an active volunteer in the community, serving as a book mender at Ledding Library of Milwaukie, and leading various youth activities. She and Ed were founding members of the Oregon Maritime Museum. In the 1980s, Ethel worked for Stretch and Sew, where she enjoyed working in the shop and teaching sewing classes. In retirement, she and Ed volunteered with Loaves and Fishes at the Milwaukie Community Center and were active in planning and participating in the Seasoned Adults Enrichment Program at Clackamas Community College. At The Springs Living, she served as secretary to the Residents’ Council and volunteered in the library.
Ethel was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church. In addition to teaching Sunday School in earlier years, she served as chair of the Altar Guild; participated in the St. Mary’s Guild; served on the Weddings and Receptions Committee; helped with bazaars, meals for shut-ins, and driving for those needing transportation. She particularly enjoyed her involvement as on-site coordinator for the Children’s Clothes Closet and singing in the choir.
Ethel enjoyed traveling, knitting, sewing, and reading. Though she traveled a bit with friends after Ed’s death, she most enjoyed the international travel that they did as a couple.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; both of her brothers; her daughter, Claudia Jane Rae, and her husband of 57 years, Edward. She is survived by two of her children, Keith (Kathleen) Neubauer and Diane (John) Adams; son-in-law, Rusty (Sheila) Rae; six grandchildren, Brian (Emmely) Neubauer, Michael (Sara) Adams, Suzie (Ben) Rizor, Joe (Tsanai) Rae, Mark (Alison) Neubauer, and Kelsey (Annalisa) Neubauer; and nine great-grandchildren, McKenna and Violet Adams, Heidi and Cora Rizor, Connor and Erinn Neubauer, Peter and Scott Neubauer, and Kallen Neubauer.
A Memorial service will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, Milwaukie, Oregon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in her memory be made to St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church or to Children’s Tumor Foundation,
