Betty Maire passed away peacefully on January 25, 2014 in her apartment at The Springs at Clackamas Woods in Milwaukie at the age of 96.
Her parents were William and Sophie (Lubisher) VanAckeren. Betty was an RN, graduating in 1939 from St. Joseph's Hospital nursing program, affiliated with Creighton University, in Omaha, NE. As a senior, Betty was chosen a princess of the University's 17th Annual Junior/Senior Prom, one of two princesses representing the school in the coronation march.
Betty married Dr. Eugene (Gene) Maire on September 17, 1940. Gene was a family doctor in Vail, Iowa. Betty often accompanied him on house calls to deliver babies in rural Iowa. At the end of WWII, having served three years in hospitals in France, Germany and England, Captain Maire returned home and moved his family to Milwaukie, OR. Betty assisted Gene in the medical office as RN while raising three daughters ages 1, 2 and 3 years old. The three daughters were to be followed over the next 12 years by a son, John and daughter, Patty. Betty was very active at Saint John The Baptist Catholic Church and School in Milwaukie. She was also active in the community - in the early 50's she coordinated the emergency polio immunization clinic for school children, recounting how additional vaccine had been delivered to the school grounds via helicopter.
To her children, she was the most loving, thoughtful, nurturing mother one could wish and pray for. She was active, smart and full of vigor. Bridge was her favorite pastime and played with her longtime women friends two to three times a month up to this past year. She was a fantastic cook and has passed on to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all of her favorite recipes. We all wanted to be in her company as much as we could to enjoy her sense of humor, her "feistiness" and her political views and comments.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister and her husband, Gene, 101 years old, in November 2012 after 71 years of marriage. She is survived by her children, Judy Maire of Shelton, WA, Peggy Gratton of Brooklyn, NY, Janet Harris of Temecula, CA, John Maire of Canby, OR and Patty Gardner, Sultan, WA; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
