Edward "Ed" William Zumwalt

August 25, 1927 — March 23, 2020

Ed Zumwalt, 92, died March 23rd due to pneumonia. Born in Hong Kong, he moved to Eastmoreland in 1930. Ed graduated from Washington High School and then joined the Navy.  He attended U of O, majoring in journalism.  In 1957 he married Patricia McHugh. He worked at the Oregonian as a journalist and later worked in logging equipment sales. In 1968 they settled in Milwaukie and raised 6 children.



Ed was known for his involvement in Milwaukie politics - notably his letters to the editor in opposition of light rail.  He was the first recipient of the Ed Zumwalt Volunteer of the Year award in 2012; co-founder of Celebrate Milwaukie, Milwaukie Farmer's Market, First Fridays, and Milwaukie Festival Daze and many other community celebrations.  He was involved in Historic Milwaukie NDA, Ledding Library of Milwaukie Foundation and Ledding Library Board, where he was instrumental in helping build the new library. Ed founded the Summer Concert Series at the Library and helped run the First Saturday concerts.



He is survived by his children, Nancy Wittig (Dirk), Bill (Jan), Dan, Donna Cooper (Joe), Jim (Shay) and John; seven grandchildren, Andrew Wittig, Stephen Zumwalt, Amanda Batt, Kyle & Katie Cooper, Zach & Savannah Zumwalt; 3 great grandchildren; his older brother, Eugene of Fresno; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia in 2012.



There will be a Celebration of Life at a future date.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory to the Ledding Library of Milwaukie Foundation (see below).
