Dorothy Ann Swanson

June 28, 1929 — June 20, 2018

Dorothy Ann Swanson (Bjornstrom) was born in Astoria, Oregon on June 28, 1929.    She passed away on June 20, 2018.  She married Edward Swanson on October 22, 1949 and they had two children, Dianne and Kristi.

She is survived by her daughter, Kristi Hoch; son-in-law, John Hoch; grandchildren, Jennifer Brooks and Rebecca Kirkpatrick; and 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward and daughter, Dianne McCauley.

She grew up in Astoria and worked at a cannery during the summers while in high school.  After she graduated from Astoria High School she worked at Pacific NW Bell.  When her children were born, she became a stay-at-home mom.

Dorothy (Dodo) and her husband, Edward (Swede) moved to Portland in 1963. Dorothy always had a passion for school and loved to read.  She always believed that women should have an education and took her first college class while she was in her forties.   She graduated from Portland State University with a 4.0 GPA with a degree in English.   Dorothy then moved to Eugene, Oregon to obtain her Masters Degree in Library Science.  She lived in Eugene in a travel trailer and would come home to her family on the weekends.  She graduated again with high honors in 1977.

She worked as a librarian at PCC Rock Creek campus, at Tanasbourne Town Center Library, and retired from Hillsboro Public Library in 2001.

After retirement, she traveled to Europe, Hawaii, and the Caribbean.  She liked to do a daily crossword puzzle and continued to be a voracious reader.

She was loved by many and will be remembered fondly.
