Dorothy Sarah Patterson

May 4, 1923 — May 4, 2021

Dorothy Sarah Patterson of Milwaukie, Oregon, died of cardiac arrest in the early morning hours of her 98th birthday on May 4, 2021.  A 30-year resident of the Rose Villa Senior Retirement Community, she had been on hospice watch at the facility's care center for a brief period before her passing.

Born in Meriden, Connecticut, on May 4, 1923, she was the youngest of six children of Frank and Nellie Symonds Augur.  When just a year old, her parents loaded the family of eight in a cloth-topped touring car and made an epic 3,000-mile, 38-day journey to find a place to live closer to her grandparents in Vancouver, Washington.  The cross-country trek came in an era void of freeways and of limited paved roads west of the Missouri River.

Dorothy was graduated from Jefferson High School in Portland, Oregon.  During World War II she was a USO hostess for military servicemen in the area.  It was at one of the USO-sponsored events at the city's Imperial Skating Rink that she met Edward (Pat) Patterson.  The two kept in touch by mail during Pat's two years of combat in North Africa and Europe.  Shortly after his discharge following the war's end, they were wed at her parents' Southeast Portland home, a marriage that lasted 58 years until Pat's death in 2003.  The Patterson's had one son, Jay, who passed away in 2005.

A legal secretary, she served as a clerk for the Canby, Oregon, Police Department then the Clackamas County District Court in Oregon City before retiring in 2003; she was active in the NALS (National Organization of Legal Professionals).

She was preceded in death by her husband and their only son; as well as brothers, Robert and Clarence Augur; and sisters, Barbara Smith, Hazel Ladd and Ruth Truman; surviving are 12 nieces and nephews.

Dorothy will be buried with her husband and next to her son at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

No service is planned but she will be honored at an Augur family gathering in mid-summer.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contribution in her memory to United Christian Fellowship of Rose Villa (see information below).
