Dewey (Scott, Duke) Samson Barton, Iii

November 27, 1963 — July 18, 2014

Portland native and resident Dewey Samson (Scott), (Duke) Barton, passed away July 18, 2014 at the age of 50. Depending on how and when you knew him, he went by Dukey, Duke, Scott, Scotty or Dewey.  He was active until the end of his life, living in his home, caring for his cherished dogs, Hunter and Bosley.

Over the last several years, Duke cared lovingly, selflessly and tirelessly for his beloved parents, Sharon and Dewey Barton, Jr.  His dedication to his mom and dad was unwavering.

He was born in Portland, Oregon on November 27th, 1963, of course, two weeks late.  Being on time was never his forte, but he was always there when you needed him and was fiercely loyal to his friends and family.  After graduating from La Salle High School in 1982, he attended International Air Academy and spent time working for the airline industry in Southern California.  He also spent many years working in customer service and sales.

Duke had a deep love of dogs, a great sense of humor and profound dedication to the friends and family he loved.  He was always the first to remember and recognize a loved one for an accomplishment or a special celebration.  Whether it was attending a theatrical performance for his niece or an athletic event for a friend or family member, you could always count on "Uncle Scotty" to be there.  Duke had an innate ability to pick out the "perfect" card for any occasion for someone he cared about.  He adored the children in his family and close circle of friends.  His niece, Mallory, and his nephew, Kyle, and the children in his life brought him immense happiness and joy. Duke was deeply proud of the children in his life.  He had a distinctive laugh that made his presence known.  Duke had the ability to connect deeply with people in his life.

His death came after a valiant battle with diabetes and kidney disease.

Duke is survived by his parents, Sharon and Dewey S. Barton, Jr.; his sister, Diana Oslund and brother-in-law, Michael Oslund; his niece, Mallory Oslund; his nephew, Kyle Oslund; his aunt, Barbara Lundeen; and his beloved, life-long friend, Cynthia Hammonds. He also had cousins in California, Washington, and Oregon.
