Carolyn Louise Hammett

August 17, 1945 — June 29, 2021

Carolyn Hammett passed away peacefully at home in Milwaukie of natural causes, surrounded by family members.

Carolyn was born in Riverside, California where she attended grade school. Following the passing of her father and her mother remarrying, her family moved to the Portland area when she was 12 years old. She attended Oregon City High School.

After working a few years in Portland, Carolyn left for Missouri and started a long career in casualty insurance as an adjuster where she thrived in a man's world. She returned to San Diego followed by a move back to Portland to be closer to her aging parents. She learned sign language which enabled her to communicate with her deaf nephew, Michael Newton.

She loved to drive, as near as a visit to the Oregon coast or on long cross-country trips. Aunt Carolyn was the peppy hostess to her several nieces and nephews, taking them to amusement parks, roller skating, fruit picking, camping and fishing.

Ambitious, original, creative Carolyn always had a project in progress. Very gregarious, she surrounded herself with countless friends. Generous to a fault she always had a ready hand and giving heart for people in need. She could not resist adopting cats and dogs. For many years, after having been diagnosed with lung cancer, she volunteered enormous amounts of time in therapy groups, raising funds and creating activities for her ailing friends. She was a strong supporter of LGBTQ causes, marching in parades and demonstrations. Carolyn and her partner Barbara whom she adored, were also very active in the Methodist Church.

Preceded in death by her father, Richard Hammett; step-father, Norbert Contreras; mother, Evelyn; and long-time partner, Barbara Sawyer. She leaves behind her sisters, Pat (Gene Thompson) and Suzanne (Bill Cummings, deceased); brother, Don Hammett (Joan); and step-sister, Mary (Jacques Vaillancourt). She is also survived by her loving step-daughter, Melinda (Brian Azule); grandchildren, Marcus Crocket and Alyssa Azule. Several nieces, nephews as well as grand- nieces and nephews will remember her fondly.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. (check back for updates)

In lieu of flowers, a contribution in her memory to Oregon Food Bank would be greatly appreciated. (see information below)
