After gracing this world with her caring and charm for more than 92 years, Alta Mae (Hummel) Ocker of Madras, Ore., died Oct. 16 in nearby Warm Springs, Ore., after a short illness. Alta Mae Hummel was born Jan. 11, 1925, in Toppenish, Wash., to Lewis Barnum Hummel and Isabel (Penman) Hummel. The 1943 Toppenish High School alumna married high school sweetheart Kenneth Ocker in 1945, and they had three children together. She retired from the State of Oregon's Bureau of Vital Statistics in 1990, and she was a longtime member of the Eastern Star's Daphne Chapter No. 139 in Milwaukie, Ore. She spent more than 40 years chronicling the genealogy of her husband's and her family, which makes this a fitting footnote for her life. Alta was preceded in death by her parents, brother Robert Hummel (Fern), her husband, son Raymond Ocker and daughter Karen (Ocker) Dobroth. She is survived by son Kurt Ocker (Debra Lucas) of Madras, Ore., son-in-law Victor Dobroth of West Linn, Ore., five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many others who considered her to be family.
