Alice Irene Shelley (Mituniewicz) passed away peacefully at the age of 103 with family by her side, Sunday, May 19, 2024. She was born March 23, 1921, to Peter and Eva Mituniewicz. Alice was the 4th of eight children and one of six girls. She grew up in the Lents neighborhood and attended Lents School, Girls Polytechnic and Franklin High School.
On November 13, 1942, she married the love of her life, Joe Shelley. During WWII they traveled around the country while Joe went to various radio schools for the Navy. After the war they lived in Portland and Spokane before settling in the Oak Grove area in 1961. When Joe retired, they traveled extensively, touring the country in their motorhome, traveling to Europe and to annual reunions of Joe’s Navy comrades. Alice also enjoyed annual trips to Reno and Cabo San Lucas with her sisters, nieces and nephew, jaunts to Spirit Mountain, playing bridge, fierce domino games with family and the occasional martini. Alice loved entertaining, hosting family holiday dinners, bridge luncheons and any other occasion that came around. She was a long-time parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, a devoted mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to so many.
Alice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe; brothers, Jack and Tom; and sisters, Helen Mituniewicz, Jean Stuart, and Rose Miller. She is survived by her sisters, Dorothy Mituniewicz and Virginia Mathews; daughter, Kathleen Fonaas (Kim); son, Joseph Shelley (Noemi); grandchildren, Troy Shelley (Corie), Peter and Hannah Gioia, and Audrey O’Neil (Gunnar); and her much anticipated and adored great-grandchild Alice.
A Recitation of the Holy Rosary 10:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 1, 2024, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 10956 SE 25th Ave, Milwaukie, OR. Private interment will be held at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery, Happy Valley, Oregon.
